Digital Media Curriculum - Six class series

The purpose of this series is to provide teachers with an understanding of how media concepts can be included in your curriculum while still meeting State Standards and Benchmarks.  The series will provide numerous handouts, examples and hands-on opportunities to aid in the development of your media curriculum.

These web-based sessions are fully interactive and presented LIVE. These are not pre-recorded movies. You will be working and learning from the instructor in real-time via a web browser connection and audio conference call.

Madonna University will be offering one graduate credit for this class out of their professional development department. Graduate credit fee is - $150.00. Payment for GRADUATE CREDIT ONLY must be made directly to Madonna University.  Payment MUST BE received no later than September 28.  A journal and a short paper will be required upon completion of the six week course.

Class Outlines


Prequel:

You don`t have a video program at your school.  Now what?  This class is designed for the novice who has not yet been able to implement media production into their curriculum.  Topics that will be addressed include:
    What kinds of cameras do we have, can we borrow, can we purchase?
    Where to find funding
    Simple/free editing programs (iMovie, Windows Movie Maker)
    Meeting State Standards
        Viewing and Listening Benchmarks    
        NCTE-Video is a form of Composition
    Photo stories
    Pre-production, production, post-production

I. Media Literacy Overview
To fully understand media production, it is essential to be able to analyze media messages.  This session will provide an overview of the Key Concepts of Media Literacy and how they can be used as a foundation to single lesson, unit, or semester in media studies.
    - Key Concepts & Questions of Media Literacy
    - Applications of concepts as they apply to print and broadcast media
    - Introduce lesson plan to teach to students
    - Audience, purpose, advertising, TIVO Ad Inserts,

II. The 20 Shot Story
Giving a student a camera and telling them to go shoot some video is easy.  Getting them to sit down and plan out their project is a little more difficult.  This session will provide teachers with all of the tools to teach students how to create a 20 shot story using pre-production planning guidelines, script writing and video-taping using in-camera editing.
Participants will be asked to complete this assignment on their own and post it to a website for further analysis and critique.
    -Camera Angles
    -Storyboards
    -Set Design
    -Props
    -Costumes
    -Rehearsals
    -Intro to basic camera use

III. Writing for a Purpose
Engage your students in this writing assignment by having them create a story for an authentic audience.  The objective for this session is to teach students how to write a dialogue or monologue on a topic that is familiar to them.  Whether it`s a comedy, a news story or a public service announcement, this assignment can be used over and over again to achieve different results.
    - Two column script format    
    - Voice over
    - Microphone types
    - B-Roll:  What is it?  What works?  What doesn`t work?
    - Framing (rule of thirds)
    - To use a tripod or not
    - Natural lighting

IV. Creating a News Package
One of the most effective ways to determine whether or not a student understands all phases of the production process is to produce a news package.  This session will focus on a tried and true step-by-step approach to the producing a news package for a school broadcast.  Students will see how a non-linear editing program is used to create their project.
